New buses boost school transportation for Upper East Bank, highway communities

– more to be procured

Two new buses have been added to the Region Four Education Department’s transportation fleet to improve access to education for students living along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway and Upper East Bank Demerara.

The government investment responds to the growing school population along the highway. The buses will transport children attending Friendship Secondary, Soesdyke Secondary, Yarrowkabra Secondary, Dora Secondary, and Kuru Kuru Primary schools.

Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister with Responsibility for Public Affairs and Information, Kwame McCoy, officially handed over the buses on Friday during a ceremony at Yarrowkabra Secondary School, where he also announced that more buses will be procured.

Minister McCoy emphasised that providing reliable transportation is an important step towards ensuring children attend school regularly and make full use of the educational opportunities available.

Although handing over two buses may be a small intervention, the minister said it represents a significant investment for students and families who previously faced transportation difficulties.

“This morning is yet another instalment of our investment in our children of Guyana, in the children that reside on the Upper East Bank and the Soesdyke-Linden Highway. We have invested sums to procure transportation to assist you in coming to school and assist you in getting home from school,” Minister McCoy stated.

He also highlighted the importance of creating a comfortable learning environment where students can focus on their education and prepare for future opportunities.

“We hope that these buses will come under strict administration and management so that there will be no misuse and abuse, and that they will all be for the benefit and the use of our children, our beautiful children of Guyana,” the minister noted.

He encouraged everyone to work together to protect public investments and create a safer, more supportive environment for children.

The government’s continued investments in education, technology and other developmental programmes were highlighted, which seek to equip young people with the skills and knowledge needed to secure meaningful employment and contribute to national development.
